General Education Requirements


Students who are enrolled in the diploma program are not required to earn general education credits. Students enrolled in the degree program are required to successfully complete 15 credit-hours of applied general education courses to be eligible to be granted an associate’s degree by The Landing School. The specific areas of general education studies are:

  • English (applied writing)*
  • Math* (applied)
  • Physics (applied)
  • Communication (public speaking, leadership, organizational)
  • Business (management, accounting, organizational methods)
  • Economics (intro, macro, micro)
  • Marketing (small business, advertising, research)
  • Fine Arts (applied drawing, photography, graphic design)

*Three credits of English and three credits of math are required. Students may then select three of the six other areas of study from which to earn the remaining nine credits. A C- (70) or better must be earned in a general education course in order to apply credit toward the degree program.

Transfer Credit


Students may submit general education credits earned at accredited colleges and universities to The Landing School for transfer. Students may also choose to take approved general education courses at the University of New England, the University of Maine System, or the Maine Community College System for transfer to The Landing School. The credits must be demonstrated satisfactorily as applicable to careers in the marine industry.
